MacBook Pro
The Macbook Pro is is a step in the right direction, good performance, good efficiency and reliability, great looks and of course - Apple OS X. The addition of Multi-Touch is a great feature, even on a touchpad that’s smaller than the one on the Air. However, the Penryn-powered processor in the MBP is running at roughly the same speed as the last generation’s chips, GHz to GHz, and give no good reason to upgrade from machines that are less than a year old. The most interesting point here is the boost in efficiency the now-pervasive LED backlighting and 45nm Penryn chips bring to the MacBook Pro, which together give an hour extra battery life over older models with CCFL screens and 65nm CPU technology.

iMac
Is the iMac for you? This question comes up with every new model, and this one is no different. Only an individual customer can answer the question.
The Power Mac of today comes with dual processors, but the real advantage of the Power Mac lies in the expandability it offers. There are eight memory slots compared to the iMac’s two; you can add a second internal hard drive and create a striped RAID array; or install PCI cards to speed up graphics or add more displays. The Power Mac also offers FireWire 800 support.
But the iMac offers a surprising amount of punch with very few limitations. It’s plenty fast enough for most people, and if you never expand the Power Mac, then you would be paying for capabilities you’re not using.
For the home user the iMac takes up about as much space as an LCD screen alone, and it’s wonderfully quiet. These two attributes alone are enough to justify considering it! There’s a lot less cabling and clutter, and it’s very elegant, too.
The two low-end iMacs come with hard drives that are to small. Internal Bluetooth and AirPort are additional items. Internal bluetooth is something you have to order when you purchase the computer; you can’t buy a card later, unlike AirPort, but you can add a USB Bluetooth adapter. We still think that the price/performance/features are more than acceptable, however, compared to other PCs.
If we have any reservation, it’s that when you decide to upgrade , you’ll end up setting aside the beautiful display. It costs $1299 for an Apple 20″ Cinema Display. It’s a pity iMac G5s don’t make it possible to replace the processor or connect the beautiful screen to another computer.

Mac Pro Dual Core
The original Mac Pro sported a pair of dual-core Xeon 5100-series CPUs (Woodcrest), and the default configuration contained two dual-core Xeon 5150s. In April 2007, Apple began offering a dual quad-core configuration with 3.0GHz Xeon 5365 (Cloverton) CPUs for $1,500 above the base configuration. Aside from the CPU change, the configurations remained identical. Just in time for Macworld, Apple refreshed the Mac Pro line to offer quad-core CPUs across the board, using Xeon 5400 series CPUs (Harpertown) on the new Stoakley platform.
The Harpertown CPUs in the Mac Pro are the first Xeon processors to make the transition to Penryn, Intel’s family of processors manufactured with the company’s 45nm process. The biggest differences between the 5400 series Xeons and their predecessors have to do with the amount of L2 cache (12MB vs. 8MB), support for SSE-4 vector operations, and some virtualization improvements. Despite the increase in clock speed and other performance improvements, the thermal design power has remained the same across the board. The Xeon 5472 in the 3.0GHz Mac Pro being reviewed has a TDP of 80W.
